Stamps
The brief for this project is to create a collection of four stamps for the Royal Mail.
Requirements:
- Represent Great Britain
- Size 38x20mm - 40x22mm includes (1mm) of non printed surface.
My idea for this project is to create a series of stamps based on ghost stories from four different UNESCO world heritage sites.

Gothic illustrations by David Hitchcock:
Durham castle is a Norman fortress located in the city of Durham and was originally built as a residence for bishops but it’s now the campus of Durham University ever since 1837. The Grey Lady is one of the ghosts haunting the castle, it is said that she used to be the wife of a 19th century Bishop of Durham who fell to her death. Many students have reported unnerving sightings of the grey lady within the castle walls.
Harlech Castle
Harlech castle is a defence fortress built by Edward I during his invasion of Wales between 1282 and 1289. It is a world heritage site located in Gwynedd, Wales and is still unfinished. According to some tourists that have visited the heritage sites you can sometimes hear the scream of stone masons from one of the corridors in the castle.

Westminster Abbey is a large Gothic abbey church located in the city of Westminster, London. It is one of UK’s most notable religious buildings and a burial site for British Monarchs. Since the coronation of William the Conqueror in 1066 all coronations of English and British monarchs have been held at the Westminster Abbey. The ghost of Father Benedictus is a monk and it is said that he has been haunting the abbey since the 20th century and tourists who had interacted with the ghost before revealed that Father Benedictus is a very friendly ghost.
Beaumaris Castle is a medieval fortification located in Beaumaris, Anglesey, Wales and was built as part of Edward I’s plans to conquer North Wales after 1282, however the castle remains incomplete due to a lack of funds. Tourists have reported sightings of Roundhead soldiers patrolling the castle’s corridors including a strange behaviour of gathering around a fire pit.
I’m satisfied with the overall outcome of these stamps and reflect the theme of ghost stories.
